Got to photograph these two geniuses for their upcoming “The Black Movie Soundtrack” performance at the Hollywood Bowl, sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
This is my beautiful friend, filmmaker and actress Tigist Selam, who I met years ago in NYC, while dancing to whatever Q-Tip was spinning that night. It turned out we were both German, had lived abroad for quite a while and were essentially neighbors in Harlem. Needless to say we hung out and collaborated many times thereafter. Here’s a small look into one of several shoots.
I got a had made by master hatter Gunner Foxx, and through that I got to visit his incredibly beautiful workspace on Sunset Blvd in the heart of Hollywood. This space somehow feels like traveling back in time, so when it came to picking up the finished piece, I took the opportunity to capture the raw beauty of the space.
We photographed Clovis Nicolas for his upcoming release on Sunnyside Records on one of New York’s finest rooftops.
Special thanks to The Flug
Shooting Bobby McFerrin turned out to be quite an adventure. We were given one hour of time at first, to create a full set of conceptual images for his album cover art, and another set for press and promotional images. He had done a lengthy video interview right before the shoot, and in the end, he gave us thirty minutes before letting us know that he was “done now”. I love my job 🙂
It was an honor and pleasure to photograph this band lead by Miles Davis’ nephew Vince Wilburn Jr and consisting of Miles Davis alumni. There was no other time to do the group shot than after the band’s rehearsal the night before their performance at the Hollywood bowl. We set up a background at the Los Angeles rehearsal studio, and ended up shooting this within a matter of 30 minutes after the band’s rehearsal. Everyone was tired and wanted to chat and eat rather than having their picture taken 🙂 But they pulled it together. Preparation was everything here.
